Have you been badmouthed/mistreated for your pics?

Journal Entry: Fri May 23, 2008, 4:47 PM
In Russia, sometimes I encounter a really, really strange behaviour of people related to music journalism and / or photography. Just to share with you the most amusing opinion of one russian girl. She claims that she works sometimes for russian ed of Rolling stone. Yet she published in her blog a pretty crappy pics of some band, where everything and everyone is dark and completely out of focus except these lights in the very back. I suggested her some tips to get better angles. She went upset, checked my blog and told me in return - "your photo [link] is a complete shit, it's not art. Learn color correction first, then advise someone else. I work for respectful journals and my work is OK for them! And I stayed in a crowd and do not want to bother others to move in order to shoot nicer pic, I respect the listeners." OK, I respect them too, but if I got a bad shot from a crowd, I do not make people view it as very good. It's still bad, right?

I suggested to critique all my set of Misfits, she boldly told that "she's gonna do it later". I am awaiting more of her best-of-class criticism, though, I doubt that she will make it at all. She is of that type of girls, that are really good to get backstage, close to someone famous. But yet, music photography is not about (only) being nice and having connections.

So, Moscow is actually got a certain reputation of being a city full of cynical and hypocritic people. I was contacting a journal in order to take on Tuska job. I got the job, but the attitude was like "bow and be thankful that we accept your free work". They do not bother even say official phrases like "Hello" and "Goodbye". I shoot the most famous band for them, I use my equipment worth few thousands, and I shall bow.

So - is it like so elsewhere in the showbiz publishing industry, or people are more respectful?

its the same everywhere unfortunately, I know a few people who make really crappy pics but who know the right people... sometimes its frustrating, it seems all about business and not about art anymore...

I've just found in general that for every photographer that is nice and friendly and can take (legitimate) criticism there are about ten who have their heads firmly planet up their own arses.
The fast that she sought your photos out after you posted a vaguely critical comment shows that she's just trying to "get back" at you about it - her comment was definitely not a crit. You're not going to get crits on the rest of your Misfits shots either.

Similarly, if you're working for publications like Rolling Stone, you really shouldn't be shooting from the crowd and should have the professional approach to ask "the listeners" to move a little so you can get a good shot. Most fans are such idiots that they'd mess up your job as a photographer and in my experience, as long as you're not climbing on people and ask nicely, they're more than happy to move a few centimetres left or right so you can get your shot.

Blah, some people just need to get over themselves (and if her mediocre work is okay for respected journals, then approach said journals and show them "real" photography ;))

I didn't read the whole text, 'cause it's a bit long and I can't tire my good eye (see my latest journal entry if you don't know what I'm talking about), but I got curious with the title and read the first paragraph. And honestly, I don't think I need to read more to know what's going on - dear Askar, that stupid girl is just ENVIOUS of your work.

Thank you!
I do not understand when people get nervous about criticism. There is not much reason to listen only to some wows and think that you, all by yourself, is best in the world... :)

Thank you for the opinion!

Yes, I thought that if Rolling stone got no better photographers, I shall shoot for them sometimes. Though, I know few very good people from Moscow who do the nice jobs!
